American soul and gospel singer (born September 30, 1933, Newark, New Jersey - died October 7, 2024, Newark, New Jersey). She was a prolific background vocalist before becoming a solo artist and released a handful of disco recordings as well. She is the mother of Whitney Houston, and the aunt of Dionne Warwick and Dee Dee Warwick.
